Sports you played/tried as a kid or in school
I mean competitively and how good were you honestly?

Offshoot from the hobbies thread.

Football
Canadian Football
Basketball
Volleyball
Baseball
Hockey
Field events in track and field
very little of lacrosse
a quick second of rodeo
tried BMX/motocross/skateboarding

Played volleyball and basketball at the highest level, I guess Canadian football but our school did not take it seriously. Never made it out of high school with any of them. Might have in basketball if I was 6 inches taller, (for my playing style)

You lot?

I was shit at everything except cricket, which I never played seriously.
Played rugby for my school, but it was union and I had to play in the forwards which I hated.
I was pretty much blind without glasses, so was never going to amount to much.

Captain of school cricket team and had a trial for Middlesex but wasn't good enough.

Was captain of school basketball team but was much too small to continue to play as an adult.

Was a reliable full back with players who went on to play pro and semi pro but I was never that good - but again was captain because I liked telling people what to do.

By 16 I was more interested in clubbing and girls so didn't play much after that.

Played rugby, basketball and football for school as well as athletics and swimming.

Only really played every year for the basketball team.

Also did fencing at a decent standard, got my yachting proficiency cert at Fairlop waters and qualified as a kayaking instructor for some strange reason.

Apart from the usual football, rugby and cricket, we played Lacrosse which is a bloody vicious pastime - I had more injuries playing Lacrosse than any other game !

Always wanted to do kayaking, did a fair bit of whitewater canoeing in Scouts and as a family but never took up the level where kayaks are needed.

And my balance was never great.

A friend of mine at University played lacrosse for England; he didn't have very many front teeth.

Ever wondered why a lot of pro Ice Hockey players have missing teeth?

Hurling, now that's a game I wished we played at school, it looks like organised GBH

Lacrosse is like hockey with less pads (and to be fair the lack of razor sharp blades) but I never found it as exciting.

The original Native game must have been a thing to behold:

"In the traditional aboriginal Canadian version, each team consisted of about 100 to 1,000 men on a field several miles (several kilometers) long. These games lasted from sunup to sundown for two to three days straight and were played as part of ceremonial ritual, a kind of symbolic warfare, or to give thanks to the Creator or Master."

But it was pretty much the same in the precursors of football.

Played Football (Sunday league local league div 1) ... Cricket (decent standard mid Essex div 1) and Rugby (until age of 16)... athletics (not bad 400m runner)... out of the 4 was a better Rugby player but gave up to work/go to West ham... fantastic game to play

"competitively" is a bit vague?

I was in school football teams, junior and senior. In my head, Brooking-esque. (Just in my MY head). I still remember one wonderstrike with my left which even amazed coach/headmaster. He was an ex-pro footballer. Started a 7-1 win.

Played cricket, too, until I realised how boring it was. Parents probably couldn't afford all the clobber for 2 sports anyway.... I wasn't bothered. Chucked it in.

Tennis, badminton, too (still), but no competitions. Just against friends. Fine sports for fun and fitness.

Can't swim, to any major degree. I can float well, though!

Isn't volleyball a game for nudists?

Sadly not exclusively, as the volleyball girls were always better looking than the basketball ones.

My favourite game of all time was British Bulldog. Brutal but fucking brilliant.
